I thought I would re-post this to help those of you working on your Pioneers assignment - hope it points you in the right direction!

To start off with, you may want to search Britannica Online (E-Resources), for brief introductions to many key theorists. I would also suggest looking at David Renfree's 'Theorists in 140' post', covering all the popular (and lesser known) theorists, along with links to further useful sources of information.

Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust works to improve the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the UK's most disadvantaged communities, where up to 40 per cent of people have literacy problems. 

Their website offers a wealth of information on literacy; they have recently revamped their Resources page, which contains links to nine new pages focusing on different key literacy areas

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is always a popular topic so here are some sources of information that might help. Let's begin with the Chimat website; their Knowledge Hub provides a link to the Safeguarding Children Training Directory  and a list of  key organisations and sources of safeguarding information.   

The DfE website offers resources on various aspects of safeguarding children and young people, whether at home or in an education setting; there is also a list of related publications available. 

A couple of new reports have been published: 'Time to Listen' sets out how collaborative working can help tackle child sexual exploitation. 'Children in need of help or protection,' published by the National Audit Office, this suggests that the DfE has not yet succeeded in their attempt to improve the quality of child protection services delivered by local authorities.

During an online resources teaching session yesterday, a student spotted a particular article which she said was exactly what she needed for an assignment! I thought I would share it here - simply search for 'Completing Your SEF - Safeguarding' in Teaching Times (E-Resources - Athens) :0)

Skills for Health

Skills for Health are a non-profit organisation, licensed by Government to provide workforce solutions to help improve healthcare, raise quality and improve productivity and financial performance. The Resources section of their website provides useful case studies, reports and guidance documents, covering such topics as workforce planning, care pathway analysis and employability skills.

Care Quality Commission

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has launched a six month partnership with NSPCC's ChildLine as part of its commitment to listen to and act on young people's experiences of health and social care. This latest 'tell us about your care' partnership is one of seven CQC projects currently running with national organisations that are in a unique position to reach and be reached, by people who may choose to discuss concerns about the way they are receiving health and adult social care or to identify examples of best practice.

Established in 2009, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health, which aims to regulate and inspect health and social care services in England. 

The CQC website offers a variety of resources for both providers and the public. Various handbooks and publications cover aspects of care such as child safeguarding, end of life, mental health and neonatal care.

CareKnowledge

CareKnowledge has recently been added to our collection of online resources. It is an extensive source of both up-to-date and archived material in health and social care including topics such as adult and child protection, serious case reviews and mental health. Updated daily, the service supports practitioners and managers in these areas to help inform on key developments. The site also offers opinion, analysis and research via blogs, briefings and special reports that help to put complex issues into context. Access CareKnowledge via the E-Resources link in the Library portal.

Occupational Therapy

The College of Occupational Therapists (COT) sets the professional and educational standards for occupational therapy in the UK, representing the profession nationally and internationally and contributing widely to policy consultations. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT) and operates as a registered charity. Their website is a useful source of information for both professionals and the public offering guidance, reports and research publications.

The College launched the 'Occupational Therapy: Improving Lives, Saving Money' engagement programme this month. The purpose of the two year programme is to influence stakeholders, by showing the difference that investing in occupational therapy can make. To set the ball rolling, they have published a report, which gives the impact of occupational therapy across urgent care pathways including acute crisis and emergency care, discharge planning and specialist services.

Education & Gender

There is a very important issue of gender balance among ECEC staff. Almost all of them are women. This has been a matter of concern for a long time [ … ] There is a pressing need to make a career in the ECEC sector more attractive to men in all EU countries. (EC 2011, 7)

If you are studying the topic of gender in education, you might be interested in the latest publication of the 'European Early Childhood Education Research Journal'; this special issue explores the debate on men in early child education today from a gender perspective. The contents can be viewed here and the fulltext articles can be found via USearch.

C ... is for Childlink

If you're not yet familiar with Childlink, here's an introduction - it is an online resource designed to give current articles, reports, research and statistics on education, employment, health, lifestyle, welfare and youth issues. Childlink can be found in the 'E-Resources' list on the Library page of the Portal. A number of Study Guides show how Childlink can be used as a useful study and teaching tool across various courses.
